Good thing is, you don't really need to know the whole story of Half Life 1, as Half Life 2 takes a mostly different story arc which is almost standalone, only need to know the consequences of Gordon's (main player) actions to understand what's going on, which the side characters in Half Life 2 talk about anyway. It's more closed and claustrophobic, no vehicles, more solitary/creepy setting, kinda like Metroid Prime, whereas Half Life 2 is the more open, cinematic sequel.
